here is a copy of the letter that was just issued by Manatee County

(Bradenton, FL -- August 31, 2016) All Manatee District Schools and School District offices will be closed Thursday, September 1, 2016, due to the impact of Tropical Depression 9. In addition, all school district extracurricular activities have been cancelled for this afternoon and evening, Wednesday, August 31st. Regular after-school programs that keep students at schools until their parents or guardians pick them up, will be open as usual this afternoon.

"This decision is being made due to the massive amount of rainfall we have already received in Manatee County this week," said Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene. "With even heavier rainfall forecast for tomorrow, we do not want our students, parents or employees out driving in these conditions."

The message of schools being closed is being delivered to parents through the district's Connect-Ed electronic phone message system, social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as the district's new mobile app -- MySDMC.

At this time, all schools are scheduled to be open on Friday, September 2nd.

District officials will reassess the situation tomorrow and alert students, parents and the community if there is any change to plans for schools to be open on Friday.
